World Congress of Marine Stations

The first World Marine Congress

17th and the 19th of November, 2021

Speakers from a wide range of countries representing marine stations and networks came together at the first World Congress of Marine Stations (online) between the 17th and the 19th of November, 2021.

Throughout the Congress, the international marine science community showed wide support for the full establishment of the World Association of Marine Stations, both for its potential as a coordination tool for international research, and as a catalyst for regional marine research cooperation. Thus, we are pleased to announce that a joint communiqué was agreed on the establishment for the World Association of Marine Stations.

The signatories to the Communiqué mark the inauguration of the first World Association of Marine Stations Steering Committee. While the Management Committee will continue to work on the day to day planning of the Association, the Steering Committee will shape together the future of the Association.

The support for the WAMS initiative was further complemented by the endorsement received by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science and the potential role of the Association as a Decade Implementing Partner.
